5 No-Cost Self Care Ideas You Can Try Today

Writer: Emmy BennettEmmy Bennett

Hey, girl, hey! I think it's safe to assume that if you're here reading this, you don't need a lecture about how important self-care is or that you have to water your own garden if you want flowers, or how you can't pour from an empty cup or whatever. Yada yada yada, am I right?

And since I care more about you actually taking care of yourself than I do you spending any more time reading this, let's just get right into it, shall we?

I now present to you: 5 no-cost ideas to help you take care of yourself, starting today. You can thank me later.

1: TAKE A BATH

Or a shower; it doesn't really matter. Personally, I like to soak in a HOT bath until I'm physically sweating and my family is starting to worry about me. Sorry, guys- this is Mommy's time. There's cereal in the cabinet if you're hungry.

BONUS: If you really want to show yourself some love, throw in a bath bomb, light a candle, put on your favorite playlist, and maybe even shave your legs for once this year. You would definitely have me beat!

EXTRA BONUS: Ever heard of a shower beer? Yeah. It's a thing and so is enjoying a glass of wine while taking a bath. My husband introduced this idea to me when we first started dating and it will forever be one of my favorite indulgences when it comes to self-care.

2: GET READY

This might be a touchy subject for some and I mean this will all the love in my heart but for goodness sake, woman-run a comb through your hair, brush your teeth and put on something other than sweatpants. There's no way you actually enjoy looking like a homeless woman who eats her family's leftovers for dinner.

You know how great you feel when you get ready for a dinner party or a wedding? Your hair is done, your outfit is looking good, and you just feel like the glorious queen that you are?

Be her. Be her as often as you can, even if you are "just" going to the grocery store.

I realize this may be an unpopular opinion and in no way am I saying you are not an absolute natural beauty in those disgusting sweats you've been wearing for a week straight, but I am a firm believer that we feel better when we actually take the time to present ourselves in a way that we are proud of.

3: GO OUTSIDE

This one's iffy for me. There are bees and other nasty critters out there ( and other people? EW.) Depending on my mood, that would be the furthest thing away from self-care that I could possibly think of.

But sometimes, going outside is exactly what we need in order to remind ourselves that we are not alone in this world and that there's more to life than the dark cave our home can feel like at times. Go for a walk, do some yoga, lay on a blanket and read a book, or take your kids to the park (hopefully it will also tire them out for a nap when you get home). Win-win!

If you are close enough, the beach will forever and always be my go-to place for a little self-care getaway. I realize that is not technically no-cost but for the sake of this argument, let's not even consider the cost of gas. Or road snacks. Or the new hat I need to protect my face from the sun. After all- we are talking about self-care, right?

4: WATCH A MOVIE

I'm not talking about Cars 3 or whatever kid movie you've seen for the fifth time today. I'm talking about a movie for adults- one with comedy, violence, cuss words, and maybe even a steamy love scene.

Send those kids outside, don't even dare ask your husband for his input on the movie, and watch something you actually want to watch!

If you live alone and don't have the aforementioned "factors" in the way of your movie-watching, then please do us all a favor and binge-watch your favorites for as many hours as you can stand.

5: TAKE A NAP

Do I even need to explain this one? Put on your comfiest clothes (or don't, if you know what I mean), crawl into bed, and get some rest! Let's just hope it's a refreshing nap and not one of those wake up feeling like a newly converted zombie nap.

If that does happen, then refer back to the list above.

There you have it; 5 no-cost self-care ideas that you can try TODAY. What are your go-to self-care routines? Leave them in the comments below!
